DR. DIPANKAR CHATTERJI

Dr. Dipankar Chatterji, born April 20, 1951 has skilfully combined his ability in biophysics with that in molecular biology to produce some original work relating to the transcription process of DNA. He is one of the leading experts working on an area of gene regulation, called gene transcription. Dr. Chatterji has shown that the inhibiton of transcription by antibiotic rifampicin in bacteria is dependent on the promoter sequence as well as on the initiating nucleotides. He is a life member of the Society for Cellular and Biological Chemists in India and of the Society for Cell Biology in India. He is also a Member of the Protein Society, USA. Dr. Chatterji was a Visiting Professor, National Institute of Genetics, Japan, and is currently Deputy Director of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad.

Dr. Dipankar Chatterji’s fellowship work was carried out at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad. He undertook a tour of the USA, visiting the laboratory of the National Institute of Health, Bethesda. He attended the FASEB Summer Research Conference at Vermont, Saxton River. He also spent some time working in the laboratory of the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore as a Visiting Professor.
